National Logger Sports Championship at the BC Forest Discovery Centre!
Cowichan – One of the most exciting events of the summer on Vancouver Island will be hosted at the BC Forest Discovery Centre. On July 11th, the Stihl Timbersports Western Qualifier event will take place in July and will later air on Canada’s sports network, TSN. “The Stihl Timbersports are a new and exciting opportunity for Vancouver Island,” says Vicki Holman, manager of the museum. “The event allows us to celebrate the important contributions the forest industry has made for our communities and showcase the Cowichan region on a national level.”
The Stihl Timbersports has six competitions that include traditional wood chopping and sawing. The competitors race against time and each other for $5,000 in prize money and a coveted spot at the National Championship in the fall. Timbersports competitors are known for their dedicated training, strength and determination. Several competitors from past years live on Vancouver Island.
The Stihl Timbersports are a part of the Vancouver Island Forestry festival at the museum. The event includes children’s logger sports, a logger and wood trade show, tree climbing demonstrations, and train rides. In the evening after the event, a dance will be held at the museum featuring live music from local entertainers. The all-day event and dance are put on in partnership between the BC Forest Discovery Centre and the Vancouver Island Forestry festival committee. “The V.I. Forestry Festival will be a fun day for visitors and families from the Island,” says Mrs. Holman. “But the audience of 2.5 million people watching the Stihl Timbersports events on TSN creates huge promotional opportunities for the entire region.” For more information visit: www.discoveryforest.com
The BC Forest Discover Centre is operated by the BC Forest Museum Society, a non-profit charitable organization. The Discovery Centre is a museum that tells the story of the logging industry in Coastal British Columbia. Exhibits depicting logging machinery, camp life and the role of the BC Forest Service are found throughout the 100-acre site.
