Marsh Fest

 

Saturday, March 20

 

10:00 am - 4:30 pm

 

Explore Somenos Marsh at the BC Forest Discovery Centre!  Join a bird watching tour through the globally significant bird area, participate in a workshop on taking nature photos, go on a bird checklist scavenger hunt, and view tiny wetland creatures in the portable pond.

 

A fun and interesting day for nature enthusiasts, families, and people who want to learn more about the important role wetlands play in our environment.

 

The BC Forest Discovery Centre is a 100-acre site including 40 acres of wetlands that are managed in partnership with Ducks Unlimited.

 

Schedule of Activities:

 

10:00-4:00 Portable pond demonstrations
Explore marsh creatures up close with David Groves, retired biologist.   See crayfish and find out how they can help the marsh.  Great fun for children of all ages!

 

10:00-4:00 Informational Tables
Find out more about the invasive species at the Invasive Plant Council's table and the recovery program for the Western Purple Martins at the Western Purple Martin Foundation's table.

 

10:00-4:00 Native plant demonstrations and tours
Join Lynn Woodgate for a guided tour of the native plants in the BCFDC's mature, second growth forest.  Lynn will also demonstrate how to make your own beautiful planter of native plants.

 

10:00-4:00 Train rides
The museum's speeder will be taking people on train rides to tour through our 100 acres of forests, exhibits, and wetlands.  The Somenos Marsh trestle is the highlight of the trip!

 

10:00-4:00 Bird feeders for kids
Make birdseed bird feeders out of fir cones and peanut butter.

 

11:00 Nature photography presentation and tour with Cim MacDonald
Learn Cim's tricks for taking amazing nature photos!  After the presentation go on a bird and nature tour with Cim.  Be sure to bring your camera to get tips.

 

 

12:00 Invasive plants with Dave Polster
Find out how to identify invasive plants in your yard and the dangers they pose to native flora and fauna.

 

1:00 Wetland tour with Dave Polster
Explore Somenos Marsh with a plant ecologist and find out why the area is unique and the important role it plays in the local ecosystem.
 

 

1:30 Nature photography and tour with Cim MacDonald
Learn Cim's tricks for taking amazing nature photos!  After the presentation go on a bird and nature tour with Cim.  Be sure to bring your camera to get tips..

 

2:45 Raptor presentation and Meet & Greet
The Pacific Northwest Raptor Centre will be hosting a presentation about local raptors such as Bald Eagles, falcons, and Kestrels.  See the beauty of strength of raptors up close during the Meet & Greet at the end of the presentation.

 

*A special admission rate of $5 per person applies (children under 2 years are free).  Members may use their season's pass.
