Maple Syrup Competition

 

Are you a maple tapper?  Enter your syrup in the competition at the Bigleaf Maple Syrup Festival!  Judging is performed by local celebrity chefs and the award ceremony takes place during the festival.

How to Enter
 

All entries must be received at the BC Forest Discovery Centre by 11:00 am on Saturday, January 30th.  All entries must be bottled in Royale 125 ml bottles (included in entry fee, however, there is an additional fee for shipping and handling).  Download the entry form here

 

Judging Criteria

 

1.    Colour    maximum 5 points
2.    Clarity    5
3.    Flavour and aroma    10
4.    Sugar content    5
5.    Freedom from foreign material    15
6.    Freedom from air bubbles either in suspension or as froth    15
7.    Freedom from sediment    15

 

TOTAL MAXIMUM POINTS    70

 

Classifications

 

Category 1    Light (light maple flavour)

 

1.    Must not ferment
2.    Must have clear and uniform colour
3.    Its colour grade must be extra light, light or medium
4.    Must have a maple flavour that is typical of its colour grade and be free of any unpleasant odors or flavours

 

Category 2    Medium (traditional maple flavour)

 

1.    Must not ferment
2.    Must have clear and uniform colour
3.    Its colour grade must be medium
4.    Must have a maple flavour that is typical of its colour grade and be free of any unpleasant odors or flavours

 

Category 3    Dark (Strong maple flavour)

 

1.    Must not ferment
2.    Must have clear and uniform colour
3.    Its colour grade must be dark
4.    Must have a maple flavour that is typical of its colour grade and be free of any unpleasant odors or flavours, but must contain traces of caramel, plant bud or sap flavours
